Nicole Yaw, a Master of Environmental Management student, spent her summer as an Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) climate corps fellow at Thai Union North America. Yaw is concentrating in Business and Environment as well as Energy and Environment.

What aspects of the experience did you find most rewarding or memorable and why?
Working in the niche field of food sustainability has been a long-standing goal of mine. I found it especially rewarding to contribute to strategy and roadmapping, engage directly with top food suppliers, and present actionable recommendations to senior leadership.
How did the coursework and resources at the Nicholas School prepare you for success in this role as well as your internship search?
Courses like Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain and Lifecycle Assessment gave me a strong foundation in understanding product value chains 鈥 essential for the food industry. Marketing also helped me stay presentation-ready, especially when showcasing progress through tools like Gantt charts.
Did you collaborate with any Nicholas School alumni? If so, how did those connections add to your summer experience?
Yes, I connected with several NSOE alumni through the EDF network who work in similar spaces. They shared valuable advice, tools, and resources that supported my internship and even helped shape ideas for my Master鈥檚 Project.
How has this internship influenced your career aspirations? Did it confirm or change your professional goals in any way?
It confirmed my passion for food sustainability and strengthened my interest in strategic roles that involve cross-functional collaboration and supplier engagement. I鈥檓 more confident than ever in pursuing a career in this space.
