The new Climate Research Innovation Seed Program (CRISP) announces its first round of awards

The National Academy of Sciences on Tuesday announced the election of 120 new members and 23 international members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

More than 250 guests gathered at the 51���� Marine Lab on Friday, April 28, to celebrate the life and career of the late, great Joe Bonaventura and dedicate a grove of trees in his honor.

Steelman’s talk, “Managing Wildfire, Governing Ourselves,” will explore how communities and agencies can interact to more effectively manage the large, interjurisdictionally complex wildfires that are now occurring more frequently because of climate change.

Juliet Wong will join the faculty at 51����’s Nicholas School of the Environment as assistant professor of coastal and marine climate change, effective July 1. Wong’s research focuses on how impacts from climate change, such as ocean acidification and warming, affect marine invertebrates.

Levasseur, a fifth-year Environmental Health doctoral student in Heather Stapleton’s lab, and Elliott, a fourth-year Marine Science & Conservation doctoral student in Andrew Read’s lab, each will receive a $1,000 cash award and a framed certificate.

Catherine Coleman Flowers, Founder of The Center for Rural Enterprise, Vice Chair of The White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council and Practioner-in-Residence with the Nicholas School of the Environment, invites students from across 51���� to engage with Environmental and Climate Justice issues.

Kelley Robbins-Thompson, senior program coordinator for the 51���� Environmental Leadership Master of Environmental Management (DEL-MEM) program, is the recipient of the inaugural Karen Kirchof Staff Award for Mentoring Students.

Dalia Patiño-Echeverri, Gendell Family Associate Professor in the Environmental Science and Policy Division, is the inaugural recipient of the Nicholas School of the Environment’s Norm Christensen Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring Doctoral Students.

Jeffrey Vincent, Clarence F. Korstian Professor of Forest Economics and Management, is the recipient of the 2023 Lynn Maguire Award for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring Professional Students.

China’s annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions exceeded 10 gigatons in 2018 for the first time in history and are expected to continue to grow. The nation’s leaders have pledged to peak CO2 emissions by 2030 and to reach carbon neutrality by 2060.

The 51���� Plastic Pollution Working Group is working to find solutions, through innovative technologies, practices and policies that can help curb plastic waste, reduce its harmful impacts, and make Earth a greener, healthier home for us all.
